Day 21: Cooking/Baking together - Prompt by me!
“Goodnight, sweetheart,” Cloud whispered, tucking Sophie into bed and stroking his hand over the blanket covering her tummy. “Sleep well, okay? You’ve got a birthday tomorrow.”
He flicked the lights out carefully, turning on the small carousel night-light Sephiroth had brought home for their precious little girl. Sophie hummed and murmured to herself in her sleep, shifting around, but falling still again, nursing at nothing for a moment before settling in to sleep. Cloud let out a slow breath and walked back into the kitchen.
“You read her Mr. Brown can Wark again?” Sephiroth murmured, looking up from where he was slicing dough into thin strips.
“She loves it,” Cloud said defensively, blushing despite himself. “She likes the noises…”
“I don’t blame her,” Sephiroth chuckled. “You make an adorable chocobo.”
“I’m not above sabotaging your shampoo,” Cloud warned with narrowed eyes before walking over to look at what Sephiroth was working on. “How goes the baking? It looks very… Pie-ish.”
He eyed the purple apples sitting before the pie crust with thinly veiled suspicion, but he was careful to keep his expression neutral. He knew Sephiroth’s quirks well enough by now to recognize unsteady ground when he saw it. The appearance of dumbapples in their kitchen was not unprecedented, but the last time it had happened Sephiroth had vanished into the night and come back spattered in dragon blood and unable to put his wing away.
"I know cake is more appropriate, but pie is all I know how to make," Sephiroth murmured, peeling the purple skin off the apples, not lifting his gaze to Cloud. “I hope she will still like it. It is very sweet."
"Seph," Cloud said softly, stepping forward and placing a hand on his back. "She’ll love it.” He hesitated, watching Sephiroth’s sure hands work for a moment, certain he knew who had taught Sephiroth to make Banora White pie, and feeling the words burning inside of him. Finally, he took a deep breath and steeled himself, speaking them aloud, despite knowing they might hurt his lover. “And I’m sure they would have loved her…"
Sephiroth bowed his head, giving up on the pretense of peeling apples, standing before the kitchen island with his head bowed and his shoulders shaking. Tears would not come for him—they never did—but Cloud wrapped his arms around him anyway, and held his lover close while he mourned.
“i’m sorry,” Cloud whispered. “I wish…”
“Me too,” Sephiroth whispered roughly. “Angeal would have liked you a lot. Genesis probably would have tried to steal you for his own.”
There was the faintest hint of fond humor in his sad voice, and Cloud nuzzled into his shoulder, lifting a hand to rest over his husband’s heart. Sephiroth let out a slow breath, standing still a moment with Cloud holding him.
“Sorry,” the tall man murmured. “I should have found a recipe that wouldn’t make me like this.”
“Make you like what?” Cloud rubbed Sephiroth’s chest gently. “Pensive about remembering your friends? There’s nothing wrong with taking a moment, Seph. And there’s nothing wrong with remembering them. I know I like hearing about them, anyway. And I’m sure Sophie will too.”
“I hope so,” Sephiroth murmured, picking up the apple again, his hands mechanically starting again from where he left off. “Though I will have to get better and not…Falling apart thinking about what happened.”
“I’m always here if you want to talk,” Cloud gave Sephiroth a tight squeeze, lifting hopeful eyes to him. “But I won’t push.”
“I know you won’t,” Sephiroth murmured, casting him a hollow smile. It didn’t reach his sorrowful eyes. “It doesn’t feel right. My daughter not knowing them. They were…Family. Or it felt that way. They probably did not feel the same. I’m sure Genesis didn’t, at least. Angeal probably would have been flattered.”
Cloud hummed softly in understanding without trying to butt in. When Sephiroth fell silent for a while, Cloud pressed a kiss to his shoulder, then went to pull on his own apron, returning to set in to slicing the lines of dough for Sephiroth, eventually flattening out the extras and carving out Sophie’s name in the pie crust. He heard Sephiroth chuckle and looked over to see the man watching over his shoulder.
“Adorable,” the General commented. “We’ll have to be sure to get a picture before we cut it.”
Cloud looked at him, and the sad look still lingering in his eyes, and the flour on his apron, and gave him a tender smile in return.
“I love you,” he commented softly. “You aren’t alone, okay?”
“I know,” Sephiroth said softly, dropping a kiss on Cloud’s lips before turning back to weaving the strips of pie crust over and under on top of the pie with a tremendous dexterity. “And that is enough. But it doesn’t mean I don’t wish they were still here too. At least some of the time.”
“I know,” Cloud said, nodding slowly, watching his perfect husband lay the cutout name across the top of the pie. “I know.”
i wish someone would translate the little boxes next to rin and haru’s heads here
because it’s probably something Interesting and all i can read is the word “rival” on rin’s box
DUDE WHAT THE FUCK.
Haruka’s is pretty normal, talking about how he used to think he didn’t need any reason to swim, but after taking part in the tournament races, something’s starting to change within him.
“Regards Haruka as a rival, but deep inside his heart, there are actually hidden feelings”
I SHIT YOU NOT IT SAYS THAT. Sure it’s probably the oh-so-pure bonds of friendship, BUT THERE WAS NO REASON TO PHRASE IT LIKE THAT.
cute habit?? probably
i imagine both steve and bucky like to come up with different ways to poke fun at sam every time they pass him during jogging
